Signs you need a lost filling or crown seen today
- A crown, cap or onlay that came off, whether whole or in pieces

What happens at your same-day visit
Our dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to check for decay under the old filling or crown and to make sure the tooth hasn't cracked. Then:
- Crown intact, tooth sound: the crown is cleaned, the tooth is dried, and the crown is cemented back on. Fifteen minutes, done.
- Crown damaged or tooth changed underneath: the tooth is cleaned up and protected with a temporary crown, and a new crown is made.
- Lost filling: decay is cleaned out and a new filling placed the same day. If too much tooth is gone, a crown may be the better fix.
- Decay or a crack reaching the nerve: a root canal first, then the tooth is rebuilt. If the tooth is broken beyond repair, our dentist will explain extraction honestly.

Can I glue my crown back on myself?
Please don't use household glue; it damages the tooth and the crown and makes a proper re-cement harder. If you must hold it in place for a day, a pharmacy sells temporary dental cement. Better still, call (863) 555-0170 and we'll cement it properly the same day.
The tooth doesn't hurt. Do I still need to come in?
Yes, within a few days. An exposed tooth under a lost filling or crown picks up decay quickly and can crack under normal chewing. The visit is quicker and cheaper while the tooth is still intact.
What should I do until my appointment?
Keep the crown safe in a bag. Avoid chewing on that side, skip sticky and very hot or cold foods, and keep the area clean with gentle brushing. Sugarless gum or dental wax can cover a sharp edge. If the exposed tooth is very sensitive, a dab of clove oil on a cotton swab helps briefly.
I swallowed my crown. Now what?
It happens, and it usually passes without trouble. Tell our dentist; a new crown will be made. If you inhaled rather than swallowed it, which causes coughing or breathlessness, go to an emergency room.
