What happens at your same-day visit
Our dentist takes an X-ray that shows the full tooth, its roots, and how it sits relative to the nerve canal in the lower jaw or the sinus in the upper. That tells us whether the extraction is simple (the tooth is through the gum and comes out in one piece) or surgical (the gum is opened, some bone is trimmed, or the tooth is divided and removed in pieces).
You get the plan and a written price before anything starts. If you go ahead, the area is numbed thoroughly. Simple wisdom tooth extractions take a few minutes once you're numb; surgical ones take longer. Stitches, if used, are usually the dissolving kind. You leave with gauze, written aftercare instructions and a number to call.
An active infection with heavy swelling is sometimes treated with antibiotics for a day or two first so the numbing works properly and the tooth comes out more cleanly. Our dentist will say so at the exam.

How long is recovery after a wisdom tooth extraction?
Plan on two or three days of swelling and soreness for a surgical extraction, less for a simple one. Most people are back to normal eating within a week. Follow the aftercare sheet closely for the first three days; that's when dry socket can happen.
What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket is when the blood clot in the empty socket comes loose, exposing bone. It hurts, usually starting on day three. Avoid straws, smoking, spitting and vigorous rinsing for the first few days, eat soft foods, and take medicine as directed. If pain gets worse instead of better, call us; it's treatable.
Do you take out all four at once?
When more than one wisdom tooth needs to go, our dentist will discuss whether to do them together or in stages. An emergency visit usually deals with the tooth that's causing trouble now, with the rest planned afterward.
